Broward Health Medical Center on S. Andrews Avenue, just south of downtown Fort Lauderdale, is the flagship of the public Broward Health system. It has 606 beds, a Level I trauma center, and the Salah Foundation Children's Hospital on the same campus. That mix matters for anyone sending flowers: an adult recovering from surgery, a trauma patient and a child can all be on the same campus, under quite different rules.

The hospital's public pages have no written policy on flowers or balloons in patient rooms, so the safest move is to call before you order.

What Broward Health Medical Center allows

Here's what we could confirm. Broward Health doesn't post a flower rule for patient rooms, and some units may not allow fresh flowers at the bedside.

What the hospital doesn't say: whether fresh flowers can go to every floor, whether latex balloons are restricted, or whether plants are allowed. As general practice, trauma ICUs, pediatric intensive care and cancer units in US hospitals often keep out fresh flowers, and many children's hospitals allow only foil balloons. Neither of those is a published Broward Health rule, which is why we suggest calling 954-355-4400 and asking for the patient's unit.

Where the delivery goes

Broward Health doesn't describe how outside florist deliveries are handled, so give the florist everything up front. The order should carry the patient's full name, the room or unit if the family knows it, and the address: Broward Health Medical Center, 1600 S. Andrews Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316. If the patient is a child at Salah Foundation Children's Hospital, say so on the order, since it shares the campus. Add your own phone number so the florist can reach you if the front desk has a question.

Trauma and surgical patients often move between units in the first days, and they may also be discharged sooner than expected. Confirm the patient is still admitted before you place the order. For late orders, see our same-day cutoffs.

If flowers aren't an option

If the unit says no to a bouquet, have a local florist deliver to the patient's home instead, timed for the day after discharge. A card, a puzzle book or a soft toy for a young patient are easy for staff to pass along, and a foil balloon may work where latex isn't allowed.

What to send to a patient here

Match the gift to who is in the bed. For an adult on a surgical floor, a small arrangement in a stable vase works well. For a child at the Salah Foundation Children's Hospital, check with the parents first and lean toward a plush toy, a foil balloon (if allowed) or a coloring book rather than fresh flowers. For a trauma patient in intensive care, wait until they move to a regular floor. Our get-well flowers guide has ideas for each case.
