Sarasota Memorial Hospital is the 897-bed flagship of a public health system, set on South Tamiami Trail in Sarasota. It is a regional referral center with a Level II trauma center, a Level III NICU and Magnet status, and its campus includes the Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute Oncology Tower, a Rehabilitation Pavilion and the Cornell Behavioral Health Pavilion.
A hospital this broad will treat flowers very differently from one tower to the next, and it does not post a single rule that covers them.
What Sarasota Memorial Hospital - Sarasota Campus allows
Here is what we know. Flowers are part of daily life in at least some parts of the hospital, but Sarasota Memorial doesn't publish a flower policy, and its visiting pages talk about hours, not gifts.
In general, cancer units, newborn intensive care and critical care are the places US hospitals most often keep fresh flowers out, to protect patients with weak immune systems. All three exist on this campus. That is common practice, not a confirmed SMH rule, so call the hospital at (941) 917-9000 before you order.

Where the delivery goes
Order from a local florist that delivers to the hospital, and give the patient's full name, the tower and room if you know them, and your phone number. Weekday daytime deliveries are the safest bet.
Visiting hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily in most areas. Critical Care has its own schedule, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., with check-in at the fourth-floor desk in the Critical Care Tower, reached by the G elevator. If your patient is there, assume flowers will need to wait.
If flowers aren't an option
For a patient in the Oncology Tower or Critical Care, a card, a book, a soft throw or a photo from home is usually a safer gift. You can send flowers to the patient's home to arrive after discharge.
What to send to a patient here
For a new parent whose baby is healthy, a cheerful bouquet with a foil balloon suits the moment. For a rehab patient settling in for a longer stay, a sturdy arrangement that lasts a week or more is better than a delicate one. Our get-well flowers guide covers long-lasting stems. For a note to someone in cancer treatment, our card-writing tips help. Up the coast, Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital is another option to compare.
